Weight Loss Drugs

Being an overweight person in today’s world is becoming a normal condition; more worrying still is the number of school-age children that are falling into the obese category. For some, the decision is simple and they just write out a check for the surgery but others prefer the harder approach of actually getting fit and controlling their diet. Losing weight should be viewed as a long term health benefit and the use of weight loss drugs to help accelerate the process is not necessarily the best course of action. weight loss drugs

The process is relatively simple as the drugs act upon the brain’s own chemical, serotonin, fooling the brain into believing it’s not hungry and at the same time increasing the body’s metabolism. Unfortunately for the manufacturers, it was found that incidence of heart valve disease were connected to the use of the weight control pills and were rapidly removed from the shelves. More recently, new drugs have been developed and prescribed by doctors; many of which are still waiting for FDA approval.

The chances are that if you asked enough people, someone will say they have used them and been happy with the results. The idea that a simple drug can change your body shape without the need to change the diet or sacrificing those pleasures in life can be very tempting. Many millions of dollars are spent each year in The United States alone whilst the drug manufacturers spend huge sums on further research into weight loss drugs.

The more recent weight control pills can be prescribed by your doctor, dietitian or purchased in a drug store and despite the advances made in the drug manufacture, there are still dangers including vomiting and stomach problems. The harmful side effects have not been eliminated and it is possible that you could still suffer from hallucinations, stroke, tremors and heart attacks. You would need to read the user information for a full list of all the possible side effects.

The side effects will depend on the person taking the medicine and can be related to their lifestyle; a consultation with the doctor first, rather than buying them over the counter, can help to reduce side effects; stopping using the drugs completely may not eradicate all the problems they may have caused. For instance it is not uncommon for people taking weight control pills to experience other side effects like sleep problems, tiredness, mood swings, stomach problems and more.

Generally from the reports it would seem that the effectiveness of weight loss drugs is improved if they are combined with a regular exercise program and a low calorie diet. The type of balanced food groups would be oats, cereals, rice, potatoes with fruit and vegetables as the best source of minerals, fiber and vitamins.

Of course this should always be combined with a good exercise routine which will use up excess calories and provide a good all round fitness workout. The most efficient exercise should be regular and contain a mixture of cardiovascular (walking, swimming etc.) and weight training using machines to build muscle, burn off excess calories and lose the extra pounds.
